Sermon Title: “When Culture Conflicts with Scripture”

Main Text: Romans 12:2

Epistle to the Romans

“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”

Introduction

We are living in a time where culture changes constantly. What was accepted ten years ago is challenged today. What people celebrated yesterday, they cancel today.

Culture has a voice.Social media has a voice.Politics has a voice.Entertainment has a voice.

But the real question is:

Whose voice has authority over the believer?

Not culture.Not public opinion.Not trends.

The Word of God must always have the highest authority.

Because culture changes…

But God does not change.

Malachi 3:6

Book of Malachi

“For I am the Lord, I change not…”

1. Culture Is Always Changing, But Truth Is Fixed

One generation says one thing. The next generation says something different.

Culture constantly redefines:

  • morality

  • identity

  • marriage

  • truth

  • right and wrong

But Scripture never needs revision.

Isaiah 40:8

Book of Isaiah

“The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.”

That means:

If culture disagrees with Scripture, culture is wrong—not God.

The church must never edit the Bible to fit society.

The Bible does not need modern approval.

The Bible was true before culture arrived, and it will remain true after culture fades.

Truth is not voted on. Truth is revealed by God.

2. Jesus Never Adjusted Truth to Please the Crowd

Jesus Christ never softened truth because people were uncomfortable.

John 6:66-67

Gospel of John

“From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him. Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away?”

When truth became hard, people left.

But Jesus did not chase them by changing the message.

He let truth stand.

That means:

We do not rewrite holiness because culture rejects holiness.

We do not redefine sin because society normalizes sin.

We do not silence Scripture because people are offended.

Because truth that offends can still save.

3. The Danger of Mixing Culture with Scripture

One of the greatest dangers in the church is when believers slowly let culture interpret Scripture instead of letting Scripture judge culture.

Mark 7:8

Gospel of Mark

“For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men…”

Even religious people in Jesus’ day elevated human systems above divine truth.

That still happens today:

  • people defend traditions over truth

  • emotions over truth

  • popularity over truth

Anything we place above God’s Word becomes an idol.

Even culture can become an idol if it controls what we accept or reject in Scripture.

4. We Love People Without Bowing to Culture

Standing on Scripture does not mean hatred.

It means conviction with compassion.

We love people deeply.

But love does not require agreement with everything culture promotes.

Ephesians 4:15

Epistle to the Ephesians

“Speaking the truth in love…”

Truth without love becomes harsh.

Love without truth becomes compromise.

God calls us to both.

Speak truth. Show grace. Keep conviction.

5. Biblical Christianity Has Always Been Counter-Cultural

The early church did not fit Roman culture.

They stood out.

They were different.

Acts 5:29

Acts of the Apostles

“We ought to obey God rather than men.”

There comes a moment when every believer must decide:

Will I follow applause?Or will I follow obedience?

Because culture rewards compromise…

But heaven rewards faithfulness.

6. The Cross Was Never Designed to Fit Culture

The cross has always confronted human pride.

1 Corinthians 1:18

First Epistle to the Corinthians

“For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness…”

The gospel will always sound strange to a culture that rejects surrender.

But strange does not mean wrong.

The cross still saves.Repentance still matters.Holiness still matters.

Strong Closing

Culture says:

“Follow your heart.”

Bible says:

Jeremiah 17:9

Book of Jeremiah

“The heart is deceitful above all things…”

Culture says:

“Live your truth.”

Bible says:

John 14:6

Gospel of John

“I am the way, the truth, and the life…”

There are not many truths.

There is one truth.

And His name is Jesus.
